The Juan Fernandez Islands

Alexander Selkirk and Robinson Crusoe are the largest of the Juan Fernandez Islands. Juan Fernandez was the Spanish sea captain and explorer who, in 1574, was the first to land on Robinson Crusoe.

Rather confusingly, Robinson Crusoe is the island that the real–life castaway Alexander Selkirk was actually marooned on. It was originally named Juan Fernandez Island, and has also been known as Más a Terra ('closer to land').

Robinson Crusoe had a population of 843 in 2012; Alexander Selkirk has 57 inhabitants.

There is also a Robinson Crusoe Island in Fiji. But not an Alexander Selkirk Island.
